Zakynthos is actually the third largest island in the Ionian Sea and makes an ideal destination for those who are traveling to Greece and looking for a relaxing island destination. Though there are plenty of tourists who visit the island annually, the major attractions never feel overrun. The island always maintains its relaxed feel while even during peak tourist season. There are also plenty of things to see and do while here.
Here are some very good reasons why you should spend some time on Zakynthos:
Relax at the Gorgeous Beaches
One of the nicest things about Zakynthos is its beaches, which are only accessible by boat, as though to keep the tourist crowds at bay. Navagia Beach, or Shipwreck Beach is one such spot. It boasts soft sand and beautiful views of the sea but since it’s a little difficult to get to but even still, the beach always has plenty of people there to enjoy it. Other beaches that are worth visiting on the island include Gyrakos Beach, Kalamaki Beach, and Agios Nikolaos Beach. If you’re staying in Zakynthos town, Kalamaki Beach is fairly close at around 6 kilometers away, whereas some of the others take a bit longer to get there.
Explore Cape Skinari
Another beautiful geographic feature of the island can be found at Cape Skinari, another location that is only accessible by boat. It’s well worth the extra effort it takes to get here! There are numerous cliffs etched into the cliffs, which are fun to explore. It’s also the home of the Elephant Stone, one of the island’s most distinct geographical features.
Take a Boat Tour
Since many of the islands most worthwhile sightseeing spots are only accessibly by boat, it makes sense that enterprising islanders are available to take you to them! There are plenty of speed boat tours available, and each of them gives you a completely unique experience. Some even give you plenty of time to sit at the Shipwreck Beach and explore all the geographical features at Cape Skinari!
Venture to Marathonissi – Turtle Island
Marathonissi is a small island near Zakynthos that is the home to a lot of turtles. To get there, you can either rent a private boat or take a tour. Spend some time watching the turtles swim in the water and exploring the geography of the small island. Be sure to bring a picnic lunch and relax at the beach for a few hours before returning home. Many people who have traveled to Zakynthos report that their time on Marathonissi.
Enjoy the Local Cuisine
Exploring the beautiful geographical features of the island can certainly work up an appetite! On Zakynthos, Greek cuisine is at its finest because of all the fresh ingredients that are readily available. Enjoy seafood, garden fresh vegetables, and homemade cheese.
