About Yperagathou Monastery in Zakynthos

Located 8 km southwest of Macherado Village, and 15 km from Zakynthos Town, Yperagathou Monastery is close to Kiliomeno Village. Built during the 17th century, the monastery is surrounded by beautiful greenery of oak trees and pine trees and wildflowers that create a most peaceful environment. Yperagathou Monastery belongs to the Monastery of Sina and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Though now abandoned, the monastery once played an important role on the island of Zakynthos.

Though abandoned, Yperagathou Monastery is an interesting site to explore. The scenery surrounding the monastery is equally impressive. You will get a real sense of calm when you visit the monastery. Inside the monastery, there are beautiful wall paintings and old icons. After admiring what is left of the monastery,take time to explore the surrounding area. You will feel as though you’ve stepped back in time as not much has changed since the 17th century. You will walk through areas that were walking by the people of Zakynthos centuries before.

While in the area, you can also explore Kiliomeno, a rural mountain village. Kiliomeno is also known as Agios Nikolaos after a church of the same name that is in the village. Some of the houses in Kiliomeno Village date back to the 16th century, having survived the large earthquake of 1953. Kiliomeno is just as beautiful as the location of Yperagathou Monastery and is ideal for leisurely strolls and drives. In the village, you will find the Women’s Agricultural Cooperative Melissiotises, a shop that offers agricultural products. Here, you can buy traditional olive oil, local wines, cheese, and honey.

Getting to Yperagathou Monastery in Zakynthos

Getting to Zakynthos Island can be done by ferry from the port of Killini located on the western side of the Peloponnese. The trip takes just one hour. During the summer months, you can also take a ferry from Kefalonia, a trip that takes 90 minutes. You can also fly to the island of Zakynthos from Athens and Kefalonia year round. The Zakynthos International Airport is located 5 km from Zakynthos Town.

Yperagathou Monastery is located 15 km from Zakynthos Town. You can rent a car or take a taxi to get to your destination. The central bus station is located in Zakynthos Town. Buses go to most destinations around the island. If you drive to Yperagathou Monastery, you will pass the town of Kiliomeno. You will take a right on to a side road that is surrounded by greenery and wild flowers.
