Crete is one of those islands where you can truly let loose and relax. Whether visiting one of the historical sites, lounging on one of the gorgeous beaches, or eating a delicious, traditional meal, there certainly is plenty to do. One of the things you won’t want to miss is the chance to drink some great wine. Sure, you can easily drink the local wine while eating a delicious meal, but there’s another way to enjoy it – by tasting wines right at the source. You’ll want to consider visiting at least one of these wineries while on the island:

Lyrakis Winery

This winery is a popular favorite amongst travelers looking to taste Cretan wines and the winery is highly rated amongst reviewers. People report that tastings are generous and that the winery is located in a great setting. The people hosting the tastings are friendly and welcoming and they’re eager to share with you their passion for the wines. They have several varietals of wines and whatever you taste, you can purchase to take home with you or to enjoy during your stay on the island. The winery is located about 30-minutes south of Heraklion.

Domaine Paterianakis

This winery is not only known for its wines, but also its gorgeous views! It is a family-owned winery that focuses on producing organic wines. They also specialize in using traditional grapes that are native to the island. However, their wines are anything but old fashioned. They use modern techniques that create wines that are in sync with today’s global palate. The winery produces both red and white wines and is open for tastings most days. The winery itself is about a 25-minute drive from Heraklion. Be sure to call in advance to make sure they are open for tastings.

Dourakis Winery

This winery is not only known for its wines, but also for the stunning views you can enjoy while here. On one side, you will be greeted with views of the Sea of Crete and on the other, you’ll have a nice glimpse at some of the nearby mountains. It is also a top rate facility and they use all the modern production techniques. While here, you will not only want to taste the wines, but also tour the facilities. They also have some of their old wine making equipment out for display so that you can see how much things have changed.

Boutari Winery

Boutari is one of those wineries that is known for its top of the line production facility and also for its delicious wines. They regularly release limited edition wines and they let you taste them if they’re available while here. Be sure to tour the winery and also taste as many wines as possible. You’ll also want to take some wines home so you can enjoy them later.

Crete is one of the oldest wine regions in Greece and there is evidence that the Minoans, one of the earliest civilizations in Greece, produced it. While visiting the island, you’ll want to make sure to taste as many wines as you can!
