The Greek island of Kythnos is just as gentle as it is dramatic. The scenery here is idyllic and is defined by rolling hills and steep, dramatic cliffs. There are also some lovely beaches on this island, but the overall sense of calm that visitors find here is much different than what can be found on some of the busier beaches located throughout Greece. Besides that, there are plenty of other things to do here, such as visit some of the great restaurants, learn about history, and shop in some of the island’s gorgeous boutiques. Here’s an overview of the things you can do while visiting here:
Beaches
One of the top activities to do while visiting Kythnos is to spend time on the beach, especially during the peak summer months. Even though the island isn’t large, there are plenty of beaches to satisfy a variety of interests! Kolona Beach is one of the most popular since it is located fairly close to Chora and is easily accessible. The sandy beach shines a golden brown in the sun, and the water is warm and invited. Even though it is easily accessible, the fact that you need to take a taxi boat to get here seems to keep the crowds at bay. Other beaches to visit on the island include Loutra Beach, Kanala Beach, and Agios Dimitrios Beach.
Panagia Kanala
Since most of the people in Greece are Orthodox Christians, there is no shortage of churches to visit. On Kythnos, one of the best churches to go to is the Panagia Kanala. Not only is this church located in a beautiful setting, but it is also a fine example of the types of churches you can find in Greece. Don’t forget to bring your camera because you’ll want take plenty of pictures! If you do photograph the inside of the church, be sure to leave your flash off so as to not damage the art.
Kythnos Hot Springs
One thing Kythnos is known for is its hot springs. Every year, people come from all over the world to enjoy the springs. Not only are the baths warm and inviting, but they are also located in a beautiful setting. If you do know that you want to visit these baths, it’s a good idea to avoid peak season. Since they’ve become more popular, they can getting a little crowded during peak season.
Katafyki Cave
Another top place to visit on the island of Kythnos is the Katafyki Cave. Although much of the island’s beauty is located above ground, this cave as an exception. Guests report that it is simply stunning and definitely worth a visit! If you know that you want to visit this cave, consider paying for the guided tour. Although the cave is stunning no matter how you experience it, learning a little about the history of the cave as well as its geography can make the experience even more worthwhile.
