Things to Do While Visiting Tilos

Written by in , Comments Off on Things to Do While Visiting Tilos

Tilos is one of those islands where it’s easy to get lost. Living in the shadow of some of the larger Greek islands, Tilos is somewhere you can go to relax and get away from it all. It’s part of the Dodekanese island group, but most people seem to pass it over in favor of islands like Rhodes.\ Just because it’s quiet, though, doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do! Where this island shines is that it can give you a great experience without being pretentious. Head to the beach, enjoy some delicious food, and hike through the green hills undisturbed. Although the island is small, you won’t be left without activities. Here’s a list of the things you can do while visiting this relaxing island:

Livadia Beach

There are a handful of quiet beaches on the island, and you really can’t go wrong spending time at any of them. However, Livadia Beach is by far the most popular. It’s closest to the main port on the island, which means that this is the area where much of the population is located. The beach itself is several kilometers long and is made up of both pebbles and sand. There are also some beds that you can rent so that you don’t need to bring your own gear.

Castle of the Knights

The Castle of the Knights originated in the Medieval time period and sits just north of Megalo Chorio. Perched on a hill, this castle was built by the Knights of Saint John. At one time, an entire village was contained within its walls. It’s still perched on that hill but is no longer the site of a village. Before it was a castle, the castle was actually a temple that was dedicated to Apollo and Athena. It became a fortress during Medieval times and its purpose was to protect both the inhabitants of the village and the road below.

Agios Pandeleimonas

This monastery is pretty old, and it is very well preserved. When you take the time to visit, a priest often comes out to welcome you and explain a little bit about the property. Aside from that, the architecture is stunning to look at and the views are worth photographing. Spend some time walking around and contemplate the beauty of the place.

Mikro Horio

Legend has it that when pirates came to the Dodekanese Islands, they set up a base in Mikro Horio on Tilos. Further adding to the legend is the fact that when you do arrive here, there often aren’t many visitors. Most people hike through the hills from Livadia on a 45 minute walk. You’ll want to spend some time here walking around and taking in the beauty and the history of the place.

In many ways, Tilos is like a typical Greek island. The Greek sun shines down for most of the year, and the climate is warm and relaxing. You can spend your days at the beach, walking through the hills, and eating great food. However, don’t forget to enjoy some of the unique places that you can only experience while here!
