What to Do When You Visit Syros
Comments Off on What to Do When You Visit Syros
Syros is one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades, but it is rich in history and culture. It is also an important hub of activity for ferries in the area and at one time, Syros was one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea. The capital city is fairly populated, but the rest of the island is fairly rural. This means that this is a relatively friendly island for people to visit because it is more than possible to find things to do in the city’s capital while also finding places to relax. This is also one of those places that has signs of life outside of peak tourist season, so if you want to visit in some of the off months, you’ll find that the island is very much alive year round. Here are some things you can do while visiting Syros:
Ermoupolis City Hall
While typical city hall buildings are not usually interesting enough to visit, the Ermoupolis City Hall far exceeds expectations. This historic place is definitely worth your time! Not only is it gorgeous to look at, but it offers some great views of the surrounding area. The city itself was founded during the Greek War for Independence and this building dates from around that time.
Saint Nicholas Church
Greece has a lot of Greek Orthodox Churches and each one has its own unique characteristics. The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is one of the prettiest on the island and it is definitely something you should see while you’re here. Come here to view the gorgeous religious icons, pristine art, and to catch a glimpse of the beautiful architecture. As an added bonus, this church is also air conditioned.
Apollon Theater
The Apollon Theater is a clean, modern venue that regularly shows world class performers. Whether you love the theater or you enjoy listening to music, there is something here for you! During your stay, peruse the list of performances and buy tickets so that you can enjoy this site firsthand. If you know that you definitely want to take in a performance, consider buying tickets before you even arrive on Syros so that you can be sure to reserve a seat.
Syros Beaches
Syros has plenty of beaches, which means that there is something here for everyone. Whether you want to participate in water sports such as windsurfing or snorkeling, soak up the sun, swim in the gorgeous waters, or spend some time eating and drinking in a cafe right on the sea, there is something here for everyone. There are also some great, family friendly beaches here, too. Top beaches include Galissas Beach, Agathopes Beach, and Delfni Beach. If you spend a lot of time on the island, you can even visit a new beach each day!
On the one hand, Syros is a typical Greek island since there are plenty of opportunities to soak up the sun, enjoy the nightlife, and eat delicious Greek food. However, there are plenty of other things to do here, as well!
