Things to Do on Samos
Comments Off on Things to Do on Samos
Samos is a small island but where it lacks size, it makes up for in beauty! Not only that, but it also takes visitors by surprise. Known for its relaxed resorts and stunning scenery, this island offers the perfect way to enjoy Greece without encountering the big tourist crowds. However, relaxation isn’t all that its known for – there are also plenty of ways to experience the Greek culture, as well. Here are some of the best ways to spend your time will you’re on Samos:
Lounge on the Beach
Like all the islands and coastal areas on mainland Greece, there is no shortage of pretty beaches on the island of Samos. You can easily spend your whole stay lounging on a different beach each day and not run out of things to do! If you only have time to visit one beach, consider headed to Kokkari beach, which is pictured here. It’s a stunningly beautiful spot that has plenty of facilities to enjoy in addition to the beach itself and there are plenty of things to do in the area. If you’re able, consider finding a resort near the beach so you can enjoy Kokkari whenever you want. Other beaches to visit include Tsomadou, Mykali, and Heraion, Balos, and Livadaki Beaches.
Visit the Potami Waterfalls
If you’re looking for something to do that is a bit more active than lounging at the beach, consider hiking up to the Potami Waterfalls. Not only are the waterfalls themselves beautiful, but the area leading up to the falls is stunning in its own way. The whole trip is about 5 kilometers long, and the trail has you walking along a gentle stream as you are guided to several back to back falls. Be sure to bring your cameras because the views are definitely worth capturing!
Spend Time at a Museum
When people think of Samos, they often don’t realize that there are plenty of archaeological gems to explore here. If you compare the Archaeological Museum in Samos to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, it is hard to be impressed with Samos. It is much smaller than that museum, which can cause you to overlook it entirely. However, this is a huge mistake because this museum is impressive in its own right. Although it is a bit smaller than some of the other museums in Greece, it has an impressive collection that is worth exploring. For those who aren’t really interested in archaeology and ancient history, consider spending your time at the Samos Wine Museum, which showcases wines from the island. In fact, if you have more than one day to spare, consider visiting both museums!
In a lot of ways, Samos is a typical Greek island filled with beaches, great food, nightlife, cultural opportunities, and shopping. However, the island certainly has a charm all its own. When you spend time here, you’ll no doubt fall in love with the gorgeous scenery here and even though the island is on the smaller side, you won’t run out of things to do!
