About Thirassia Island
Thirassia is a small island that doesn’t see a heavy tourist crowd, but it makes a nice retreat for people looking to get away from it all. If you’re hesitant to spend an extended period of time on the island, doing a day trip from one of the other islands in the Cyclades, such as Santorini, is a good compromise. It is easily accessible from Santorini by Ferry and you don’t need to spend more than a day here in order to see a lot. While Santorini is the largest of these islands, Thirassia — which consists of a little more than 3.5 square miles — is the second largest island in the group.
Not only is Thirassia a relatively small island, but there are only a little more than 300 people living there, making it the perfect place for a secluded island adventure. There are also 5 small villages on the island that might be worth visiting: Agia Eirini, Agrilia, Manolas, Ormos Korfou, and Potamos. In Agrilia, which is the smallest of these villages, there are only two people living there, and in Manolas, which is the largest village on the island, there are only a little more than 150 residents.
In fact, Thirassia was once part of Santorini. Sometime in the second millennium B.C., a volcano erupted on Santorini, causing widespread destruction. In fact, it is considered one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever recorded and may have inspired the myth of Atlantis. During the eruption or its aftermath, Thirassia broke off from Santorini.
