The Greek island of Santorini is just as beautiful in person as it is in its photographs. Upon arriving on the island, guests realize that the images they saw that compelled them to book their trip in the first place were completely accurate. It’s true that the scenery on this island doesn’t disappoint. Yet, many visitors have yet to work out the best way to enjoy it. Sure, it is possible to enjoy it from the comfort of the hotel balcony or at one of the island’s beaches. What most people don’t realize, however, is that hiking will enable them to view the beauty of the island in ways they never imagined! These top hikes will give visitors to Santorini a first-rate glimpse of some of the island’s most amazing natural beauty.
Trail from Fira to Oia
For those who love to walk in scenic areas, the hiking trail that stretches from Fira to Oia shouldn’t be missed! This trail hugs the caldera and gives walkers unsurpassed views of the surrounding Aegean Sea. For some of the best views, it is a good idea to do this hike before sunset in order to arrive in Oia just as the light changes. Since Oia has some of the best views on the island during sunset, it’s a good idea to get here early enough in order to secure a top spot. After the sunset is over, there’s also no need to walk back to Fira. It’s possible to take a bus or hire a taxi back to the hotel.
Skaros Rock
Those who love to hike will find that there is a lovely trail at Skaros Rock to explore! Located in Imerovigli, this geographical feature is located off the road that stretches from Fira to Imerovigli. During the peak months of summer, it is a good idea to get this walk done in the early morning. Once the sun gets high, visitors report that the heat is often too much for them. It’s also a good idea to bring a good camera because the views on the hike and from the walk are stunning. This hike is also fairly strenuous and technical so it is a good idea to wear the proper shoes.
Oia to Amoudi Bay
Oia is a village that sits on top of the famous caldera, which means that getting down to the water does require some effort. Although the walk from Oia to Amoudi Bay isn’t a long one, it is strenuous. However, the trek is worth the effort – Amoudi Bay has a lovely swimming hole, some great fish taverna restaurants, and a scenic glimpse of the Aegean Sea and the rest of the island. The trek up is much worse than the one down to the water, however, since the path is so steep. During peak tourist season, it may be possible to take a donkey ride up.
For those who love beautiful natural scenery, Santorini is a great island to visit. These hiking trails offer the ideal way to explore the island from another vantage point.
