Written by in , Comments Off on Spend Time at Panagia Paraportiani on Mykonos

While in Greece, it is easy to notice that there are churches everywhere. However, some churches, such as Panagia Paraportiani, stand out more than others.  Located on the island of Mykonos, this is one of the most popular churches to visit in all of Greece.  Although the church is not open for visitors to enter, it is worth a trip to visit and admire the architecture with stunning beachside views to match. Make sure your camera is charged because you will want to take lots of pictures here. There is a reason why it is one of the most photographed churches in the entire world. Here’s more information:

Getting to Panagia Paraportiani

Once you make your way to the beautiful island of Mykonos, you can find Panagia Paraportiani in the town of Chora. Inside Chora is a little neighborhood on the sea called Kastro where the church is located. You can’t miss it once you’re there. It is situated right at the entrance of the neighborhood. The name ‘Paraportiani’ literally translates to ‘next to the entrance door.’

The town is small with lots of alleys and walkways. You can get near the church by car, but why not take a nice long stroll to the Panagia Paraportiani from town? It’s a beautiful walk with lots of little sights to see along the way. Be there by sunset and see a truly spectacular view from the church.

About Panagia Paraportiani

The church is more than just a small white cube. It’s actually six churches that were built right next to each other over time. The main church center in the complex is called Agios Efstathios with three others surrounding it. The dome church, the Church of the Virgin Mary, was constructed on top of the main church. The oldest building was built in 1425 with the most recent built in the late 17th century. Due to expected wear, renovations were made in 1920.

The buildings are stark white with interesting architectural forms. Since each church was made in a different century, they all have a unique look. Definitely a fun place for someone to go who is interested in history and architecture.

What to Do at Panagia Paraportiani

The church is extremely photogenic–so you will see a lot of people gathering to take pictures. Some photographers even set up tripods and photograph it at different parts of the day. It is a lovely place to go for a stroll and there are lots of cute little places to hang out nearby.

If you’re going to be in this part of town, take advantage of the great food in the area and grab a bite to eat at one of the local cafes. There’s nothing more Greek than sipping on an espresso and enjoying some baklava. Perched right on the sea, you’ll get to catch some of the best sunsets in all of Mykonos at this spot.

Panagia Paraportiani is a church that you simply won’t want to miss while on Mykonos. Be sure to take plenty of pictures while here!
