What to Do in Oia, Santorini
Comments Off on What to Do in Oia, Santorini
The island of Santorini is one of the most unique in all of Greece since most of it is perched on the rim of a dormant volcano. Most of the island looks as if it is shaped like a giant horseshoe, as if part of the island is missing. As it turns out, that’s exactly what happened. A massive volcanic eruption that took place thousands of years ago is responsible for that hole. Many think the eruption and the island’s lost inhabitants are what started the myth of the Lost City of Atlantis.
In other words, when on Santorini, it feel as if you are walking through history and nowhere is this more prevalent than in Oia, one of the island’s gems. Here are some things you should do during your stay in Oia:
Watch the Sunset
It’s true that the sunsets on Santorini are legendary and the sunset on Oia is considered to be one of the island’s best spots. For those who have a view of the caldera from where they’re staying, watching the sunset in Oia is a simple matter. Otherwise, some of the main viewing spots for the sunset that are located throughout the village can get rather congested. During peak tourist season, you’ll start to notice that activity in the village starts picking up as sunset approaches. Ask around for information as to where the best lookout spots are so that you won’t miss out!
Visit Amoudi Bay
For many people visiting Oia, Amoudi Bay is one of the clear highlights. In order to get to the bottom of the bay, however, you’ll need to either walk or take a donkey. The steps can be rather strenuous, especially when you need to climb back up to get to Oia. However, the views from the bay, the opportunity to do some swimming, and the chance to eat at one of the fish tavernas makes the trek worth it.
Drink Wine at Domaine Sigalas
One thing that Santorini is known for is its red wine. Although you could easily order the house wine from any cafe, restaurant, or taverna that you visit while in Oia, visiting a winery such as Domaine Sigalas has its own charms. You’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the property. Not only is it in a gorgeous setting, but there is also a full restaurant here, which gives you the opportunity to drink wine that is perfectly paired with the traditional cuisine.
Enjoy the Byzantine Castle Ruins
As is the case with most of the island, there is evidence in Oia of nearly every time period throughout Greek history. The Byzantine Castle Ruins are a place where you can not only witness a part of the island’s past, but also take some amazing pictures. As an extra bonus, this also considered to be a romantic place that has a great view of the caldera during sunset.
While visiting the island of Santorini, you won’t want to miss the chance to do these activities in the village of Oia, which is perched on the caldera.
