The harbor was built by the Venetians between 1320 and 1356 and it served as an important center. To the east of the beach is an old soap factory as well as the old sanatorium of Chania. The chimneys of the soap factory are still standing and can be seen from quite a distance.
Once at Nea Chora Beach, you can enjoy lounging on the sand and swimming in the water. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for rent at the beach. These items are wiped down between customers to ensure health and safety. When you’re hungry, you will find a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, snack bars and fish taverns in the area to choose from.
Every summer at Nea Chora Beach, the Sardine Festival is held. You can enjoy free fish, dancing, and traditional music. The sunset from the area is also worth a trip to the beach during the beautiful summer months.
