When people visit Athens, chances are pretty good that they hit all the major tourist sites, such as the Parthenon. However, there is actually a lot more to the city than that! Athens is filled with interesting sites to see, and not all of them involve learning about the city’s rich history. Sometimes, all you really want to experience is a great outing with an outstanding view, such as Mount Lycabettus. Here’s a look at what it takes to visit this interesting tourist destination:
Information About Mount Lycabettus
Mount Lycabettus is located inside the city of Athens. As you can see from the photograph, it towers over the regular buildings and is a prominent geographical feature. It stands at around 300 meters, or over 900 feet, above sea level, and as a result of that, it is also a perfect spot for people to enjoy a panoramic view of the area. Mount Lycabettus, also referred to as Lycabettus Hill, is truly an interesting part of the city. It’s mainly comprised of limestone and other minerals and has plenty of vegetation growing on it.
Perfect Place to Enjoy the View
Because the hill towers over the surrounding area, people flock to it to catch a glimpse of the city. Because it is so popular for that purpose, there are several ways that you can get up tot he top. First of all, you can get some exercise by hiking to the top. However, it almost 1000 feet above sea level so this type of climb may not be possible for some people. Luckily, it is such a popular attraction, there’s a solution to that. There is also a cable car that you can ride to the top!
The View at the Top of the Mountain
Once you make it to the top of Mount Lycabettus, there are plenty things that you can do. First of all, you might want to spend some time walking around. Since you have a panoramic view of the city, it’s a good idea to see it from all angles. Amongst the things you can see from the hill include the Panathinaiko Stadium, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Hellenic Parliament, and the Acropolis of Athens. This is also a popular spot to see the sunset. Be sure to look up the time of the sunset in advance and time your visit to the top just right so you can snap a few pictures of the setting sun.
See the Sites at Mount Lycabettus
Mount Lycabettus is more than just a hill with a view. There are actually some sites to see once you get to the top. There is actually a large open air theater at the top and there are still concerts at this venue. There are also some ruins to visit, as well. So in addition to being able to see the view, you can also witness a piece of Athenian history.
While in the city of Athens, you can certainly see all the typical sites, like the Parthenon. You should also make time to see places such as Mount Lycabettus so that you can enjoy the amazing view.
