Santorini is one of the most geographically unique islands in all of Greece. Once you arrive here, you’ll see why. The island is made up of volcanic rock and an ancient volcanic eruption blew a hole straight through the island. When people come here, they are just as charmed by the scenery as they are the sights.
One of the things that really captivates people while they are here are the villages. There are so many of them that it can be hard to choose which ones to spend your time at. Although Mesa Gonia isn’t the first on most people’s lists, it is worthy of at least a day trip. Here’s more information about Mesa Gonia:
Getting to Mesa Gonia
Before you can make your way to Mesa Gonia, you need to first travel to the island of Santorini. Typically, people do this by either taking a plane that will fly into the regional airport or take a ferry one of the major ports in Greece. The island is also a stop for cruises, but they don’t usually allow you with enough time on the island to visit places like Mesa Gonia. This village is located about eight kilometers from Fira, which is one of the most popular destinations on the island. If you’re staying in Fira, you can easily carve out some time to visit Mesa Gonia. To get here, you can take a taxi, bus, or your rental car.
Why Visit Mesa Gonia
Although Mesa Gonia is small, it is absolutely worth visiting. One of the things that Santorini is known for is its wine, particular the red wine. Since the island itself is made up of volcanic rock, the soil is unique. The grapevines that are present on the island respond well to this volcanic soil and it is said that the wine has a unique flavor. Mesa Gonia is located in an area where many of these vines grow and there are plenty of winemakers in this area. When you visit here, you will notice the vines immediately and you may also find yourself with plenty of opportunities to sample the wine!
What to Do in Mesa Gonia
As mentioned above, Mesa Gonia is located in an area where a lot of grapevines grow. As a result of this, there are some wineries that are worth visiting, such as the Argyros Estate and Roussos Winery. If you’re interesting in trying wine, consider calling in advance to make sure that they’re open and that they’re prepared for you. Tasting wine in Greece is a fun experience and one that you won’t want to miss. Besides the wineries, there is also an old church to visit called the Church of Panagia Episkopi. If you decide to visit the church, make sure you are properly dressed.
While visiting the Greek island of Santorini, you should consider spending some time in the village of Mesa Gonia.
