Greece is home to many beaches that are worth visiting. Whether you are visiting one island or visiting a number of Greek islands during your trip, they all have beaches that you’ll want to spend time at. The following are some Greek islands and the best beaches they have to offer.
Crete
As the largest island of Greece, Crete has a number of beautiful beaches to visit. Thanks to the mild climate of the island much of the year, the beaches can be frequented more often. Elafonissi Beach, located close to Chania, is unique with its pink coral sand. Off the coast of Elafonissi Beach there is also a small reef.
Another popular beach in Crete is Matala Beach located close to Heraklion. This beach features 300 meters of golden sand and is accented by cliffs and caves on the right side. Sougia Beach is one of the most protected areas in Greece. The beach is located between Paleochora Village and Agia Roumeli Village, about 70 km south of Chania.
Santorini
The Greek island of Santorini was the location of a large volcanic eruption, which created some of the most unique and beautiful beaches in the world. Red Beach, located near the Bronze Age Minaon settlement of Akrotitri, is surrounded by impressive bright red cliffs. The sand of Red Beach is pebble-like in shades of black and red.
Perissa Beach and Perivolos are two beaches that are side by side, so you can walk from one to the other and enjoy the black volcanic sand and azure blue waters.
Mykonos
Mykonos Island is known for its party-like atmosphere, but there are many beaches to visit whether you enjoy that atmosphere or if you’re looking for a little more peace and quiet. Paradise Beach suits its name perfectly with its white sand and dreamy turquoise waters. Paradise Beach is organized with sun beds and umbrellas.
Close to Mykonos Town, you will find Agios Lazaros Beach, where you will find more tranquility thanks to smaller crowds. For a romantic beach date, head to Houlakia Beach where you will experience the most beautiful sunsets. Houlakia Beach isn’t ideal for swimming, but it’s perfect for anyone who loves to be in nature.
Zakynthos
The Greek island of Zakynthos is known for its exquisite natural beauty. The beaches of the island are no exception. Spanzia Beach is a popular beach thanks to its proximity to the main town. Sun beds and umbrellas are available to rent at Spanzia Beach. The beach is made up of both sand and small pebbles. Surrounding the beach is lovely vegetation that adds to the ambiance of the area.
The most well-known beach of Zakynthos Island is Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach. As the name states, the beach is home to a ship that was shipwrecked on the beach. You can get to the Navagio Beach by tour excursion.
When spending time in Greece, be sure to visit these islands and their beautiful beaches.
