In a lot of ways, Rhodes is just like any other Greek island. There is plenty of sunshine, amazingly beautiful beaches, and a local culture that makes the island worth visiting. However, there is another side to this island as well. Amidst all of its natural beauty lies an interesting past – and there is evidence of this past located throughout. Whether gazing at the Medieval past at the Palace of the Grandmaster or enjoying one of the island’s archaeological sites, there are certainly plenty of opportunities to learn about the island’s history. Here are some of the best ways to explore the varied history of Rhodes:
Archaeological Museum of Rhodes
To start off your exploration of the history of Rhodes, you might want to start at the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, which is located in Rhodes Town. This is one of the best places to view artifacts that were found in archaeological sites that are located throughout the island. For instance, many things that were uncovered at the archaeological site at the Acropolis of Lindos are located here. The museum itself is located in the old Hospital of the Knights and visitors report that the grounds are lovely to walk through. They also have other items besides artifacts, including mosaics and some gardens.
Acropolis of Lindos
By definition, an acropolis is an ancient citadel that is located on a large hill or mountain. The Acropolis at Lindos, which is now a shadow of its former glory, was the main area of Lindos back when it was built in ancient times. Some of the original structures are still standing, which makes this a pleasant outing. If you would like to learn more about the acropolis, it is a good idea to take a guided tour. In addition to viewing what’s left of the ancient architecture, there are also some great views here.
Palace of the Grandmaster of Knights
One of the things that Rhodes is most known for is that it was once the official head of the Knights of Saint John. The Palace of the Grandmaster of the Knights of Rhodes, also called the Kastello by locals, is located in Rhodes Town and is at the center of this part of the island’s history. The Kastello was originally built in the 7th Century A.D. in Byzantine times and in the early 1300’s, the Knights of Saint John converted it into their grandmaster’s castle.
Monolithos Castle
Monolithos Castle is also another place where you can go to learn about the history of Rhodes. Perched on a cliff overlooking the water, this castle boasts some stunning views. Although it takes some effort to get here (depending on where you stay) the effort is well worth it. Stop and take some pictures and explore the grounds. You can also book a private guided tour to learn more about the place.
Rhodes is a Greek island that has a rich history. During your visit, you’ll certainly want to enjoy the beaches and sunshine. However, it is also a good idea to explore its history.
