Learn About History While Visiting Mykonos
Comments Off on Learn About History While Visiting Mykonos
Most people nowadays know that Mykonos is an island that is known for its fantastic nightlife and beautiful beaches. However, before the jet setters and vacationers flocked here in search of the perfect resort community, this island has had a rich history that started in ancient times. While visiting the island for relaxation, why not take the time to learn about the history of the place, as well? Here are some of the best places on Mykonos to do just that:
Delos
One of the best places to take in the history of the island is at the Archaeological Site of Delos. Many people consider this one of the most important historical sites in all of Greece! When archaeologists and historians analyzed the ruins, they realized that people had been loving on Mykonos since the Third Millenium BCE! In addition to being an historical place, it’s also a sacred one. There’s evidence here of religious activity from the times of Greek mythology.
Archaeological Museum of Mykonos
If you only have time to visit one place to learn about the history of the island, this museum is it! The museum is on the smaller side, but it does contain some great artifacts. The plaques are also in English, so you can learn about the archaeological history of the island with ease. If you have time, you might want to take a guided tour where you’ll be able to ask any questions you may have. Many of the artifacts found at the Delos archaeological site are being housed here.
Rarity Gallery
While at the Rarity Gallery, you’ll get an overview of history of a different sort. In fact, this is more of an art gallery than a historical place, but it is a good place to learn about some of the quirkier art that can be found on Greece. It’s also interesting to hear about the history of some of the more unique pieces.
Windmills
Windmills are a part of the island’s historical past. For a long time, these windmills were the chief source of power on the island. Now, even though most of them aren’t even in use, they stand as reminders to another time. They’re also beautiful to look at. Don’t forget to bring your camera while gazing at them. They’re highly photographable, especially at sunset. Be sure to visit Lena’s House, which has plenty of refurbished windmills.
Armenistis Lighthouse
This lighthouse is also another part of the island’s historical past. Built in 1891, this lighthouse is a part of the island’s recent history. However, without it, many ships wouldn’t be able to find their way. This was especially important before modern instrumentation. Today, this is a great place to go for some great photo opportunities and to view an old Greek lighthouse closeup.
As you can see, there are plenty of things that you can do on Mykonos that don’t involve the beach or nightlife. However, it is important to understand that these places are merely part of the experience. You should enjoy the beaches and nightlife, too!
