The Aegean island of Patmos is known for being an important Christian pilgrimage site. The island is home to a number of beautiful beaches and villages. One of the must-see villages of Patmos is Grikos. Here’s what you should know about Grikos Village.
About Grikos Village
Grikos is a quaint fishing village located about 5 km of Chora (Patmos Town) and 5 km southeast of Skala. Grikos Village is a beautiful area surrounded by greenery and water. The beach of Grikos Village is long and sandy and features tall trees and alluring water. Over the years, Grikos Village has evolved to become more of a tourist village. The scenic village is home to hotels and a marina for those with yachts. Though popular with tourists, you can be sure you will enjoy a quiet and relaxing vacation.
What to Do in Grikos Village
Grikos Beach, though long, is more of a bay. The views from the beach are impressive. The surrounding hills and passing yachts add to the ambiance of the beach. The waters are ideal for swimming. If you want to explore, there are walking paths that lead you to interesting sites. You can pick up a local map that has these paths marked. If you prefer adventure in the water, you will want to try snorkeling. The seabed is rich in beautiful fish. At the beach you can also rent sunbeds and umbrellas to make your stay more comfortable.
When you’re not lounging on Grikos Beach or swimming in the beautiful water, you will probably want to enjoy some good food. Grikos Village is home to tavernas that serve delicious food and drink. Imagine having your meals near the harbour where you can enjoy the scenery, people watch, and see the boats pass by. If you prefer a dining experience a little higher, you will be pleased to find a restaurant on a hill that will allow you to overlook the bay. Whichever experience you choose, you will not be disappointed.
Getting to Grikos Village
To get to Patmos, you can fly though there is no airport on the island. The closest airports are located at Leros Island and Kos Island. From either of those islands you can take a ferry to Patmos Island. The ferry ride from Leros is 2 hours while the ferry ride from Kos is 1 hour. There is a ferry that runs from Athens to Patmos, but the trip is over 7 hours, so you’d be better off to fly from Athens to either Leros or Kos.
Grikos Village in Patmos is convenient to get to from both Skala and Chora thanks to buses that run regularly from both. There are also old dirt paths that connect the villages, which you may enjoy traveling by foot if you enjoy walking. You can even walk to and from Kambos.
Enjoy spending a relaxing vacation in Grikos Village while on the island of Patmos in Greece.
