Unique Experiences to Have on Santorini
Comments Off on Unique Experiences to Have on Santorini
Santorini is one of the most unique of the Greek islands because the center of the island actually collapsed in a dramatic volcanic explosion that happened in ancient times. The part of the island that remains is hauntingly beautiful because no matter where you go, the expansive caldera is a reminder of what happened all those centuries ago. Perhaps it’s because the physical landscape is so captivating, there are some pretty unique experiences you can have while visiting here because of it.
Here’s an overview of some of our favorites:
Go Cliff Diving
Amoudi Bay is most visible from Oia. In fact, all you would need to do to be able to gaze at the bay is peer over at the caldera from the top, or you can descent the 300 steps to the bottom and view the bay from close-up. However, there is another way. Did you know that you can actually dive off some cliffs and into Amoudi Bay? In fact, this is a popular swimming spot that can be accessed from the 300 steps from Oia to the bay. Ask for advice in Oia on how to access it because you need to walk on a certain cliff to get there.
Rent an ATV
Do you want to take a unique tour around the island? If so, you can see it on your own terms by renting an ATV, or a quad bike! Because the island is so small, there are a limited amount of vehicles available. Even though the public transportation is pretty good, and there are also taxis available, an ATV allows you to explore aspects of the island that can’t be reached by car.
Visit a Black Sand Beach
Another unique feature of Santorini is that some of the beaches have black sand. This is a direct result of the island’s past volcanic activity. If you want to experience this black sand, you’ll need to head to either Kamari or Perissa beaches. Be sure to wear shoes while walking on the sand because the sun can make it so hot, it could burn your feet! You’ll also want to rent one of the provided chairs so that you can enjoy the beach without the extra heat from the sand.
Walk the Fira Trail
If you love to explore places by foot, you’ll absolutely want to walk on the Fira trail! This trail stretches from Fira to Oia and will take you about three hours if you walk it at a leisurely pace. There are some amazing photo opportunities along the whole route since much of it gives you a glimpse of the caldera. Begin your hike about three hours or so before sunset so that you can arrive in Oia just as it begins. Oia has one of the most memorable sunsets on Santorini. Finish your hike by browsing through the shops and eating a delicious meal in one of Oia’s great restaurants.
These unique experiences are a great way to pass the time on Santorini!
