About the Dominican Convent

The Dominican Convent in Santorini is located in the Catholic quarters of Fira. The convent was founded in 1956 by a young woman who lived on the island. The Dominican Convent hosts about 12 nuns of different nationalities. The Dominican Order was founded in 1216. The church of the monastery is called Our Lady of the Rosary, Rosaria as it is known by the locals, and is a combination of baroque-style elements and island architecture. The Dominican Convent is a well-respected convent for people of the Christian faith.

Also in the Catholic quarters of Fira is the Catholic Cathedral, which is well-known for its tower clock and architecture. The Cathedral was damaged by the 1956 earthquake, but restored soon after.

Spend Time at the Dominican Convent

When you visit the Dominican Convent in Santorini, you will immediately notice the unique architecture. The baroque features of the church has attracted both archaeologists and historians. You can admire the quality of craftsmanship that occurred during medieval times. There is a street that winds through the Dominican Convent, which you can stroll along and explore the different areas. You may even be lucky enough to hear nuns singing during your walk. The view from around the Dominican Convent is quite lovely, so be sure to take it in while you’re there.

While in the Catholic quarters, you can also visit the Catholic Cathedral. The beautiful peach exterior will catch your eye and draw you in. Its size also helps it to stand out. The interior of the cathedral’s dome is lilac and other areas are cream and orange.

While in Fira, you can walk along the cliff side, visit the museums, and the main square. A trip to Fira will be a great addition to your trip to the island of Santorini.

Getting to the Dominican Convent

The island of Santorini is a popular destination, so getting there is quite easy. Ferries to Santorini come from Piraeus in Athens. The port of Santorini is Athinios, which is just 8 km from Fira. If you take the ferry, you won’t be far from the Dominican Convent. Flights to the Santorini National Airport come from Athens and international airports around Europe. The airport is on the northern side of the village of Kamari.

The Dominican Convent is just a 10 minute walk from the Central Bus Station and 6 minutes from a private parking lot if you decide to drive. If you’d like to be picked up from your hotel by a taxi, minibus, or VIP car, you can have that arranged. Depending on where you are coming from, you can take the bus, taxi, car, or walk to the Dominican Convent.
