Athens is one of the most iconic destinations in Greece. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that it is a charming, modern city with an incredible history and past. There are remnants of its ancient beginnings all over the city, such as at the historic Acropolis. There are also plenty of other things to do, such as visiting a museum or spending some time at the zoo. There’s definitely something here for all ages!

Acropolis
If you have time to do only one thing while in Athens, you should spend time at the Acropolis. Home to some of the most distinct landmarks in the city, such as the Agora and the Parthenon, this site s a must-see. Besides the many landmarks that are here, you’ll want to spend some time in the Acropolis Museum, which houses many artifacts that were uncovered here.
National Archaeological Museum
Athens and the surrounding area is filled with archaeological sites, many of which had a lot of artifacts. Most of these artifacts were removed from the sites and places in museums, such as the National Archaeological Museum. Here you will see important artifacts like the Mask of Agamemnon, the Fisherman Fresco, the Child of Marathonas, and much more. You won’t want to miss the chance to visit this museum while here!
Monastiraki
If you’re looking for something unique to do while in Athens, you’ll want to head to Monastiraki. Not only are there some sites to see here, such as Hadrian’s Library, but is also home to a large, traditional flea market. This is where all the locals go to shop! You will find people selling pretty much everything, such as clothing, food, souvenirs, jewelry, and more. If you want to practice bartering, this is also a great place for you. Bartering is part of the culture at a Greek market!
Attica Zoological Park
If you are looking for a great thing to do with your kids, you’ll want to spend some time at the Attica Zoological Park. This zoo is great for people of all ages and will satisfy the animal lovers in your group. Learn all about reptiles, birds, and various animals at this unique zoo. Located right in Athens, it’s easily accessed by taxi, car, or through public transportation.
Mount Lycabettus
The nice thing about Athens is that there is a lot of variety as to the things that you can do. If you want to take a break from visiting the museums and archaeological sites, you might want to spend some time at Mount Lycabettus, which is a mountain located inside the city. Get some exercise while hiking to the top, and then spend some time enjoying the city from a higher vantage point. There are also some sites to see at the top, such as the Panathinaiko Stadium.
Filopappou Hill
If you are looking for a great place to see the sunset, you’ll want to head for Filopappou Hill. It is also a great place to get some exercise! Once you get to the top, you can also visit some historical sites, such as the Filopappou mausoleum where Socrates was held as prisoner before his trial and an open air theater. The views here are also stunning and you will want to take plenty of pictures while here! Time your trek to the top for just before sunset so you won’t miss it.
National Gardens
The National Gardens are another site you won’t want to miss while in Athens. This is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city! Filled with plenty of relaxing activities. Walk around and enjoy the gardens, visit the small zoo, and take in the beauty of the city while here. It makes for a nice escape.
Syntagma Square
Located in downtown Athens, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit here. Once a day, there’s a changing of the guards ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is also the site of the old palace, which is now the Greek Parliament. It is also close to Monastiraki, the Plaka, and the Acropolis so is considered to be the center of the city.
