Visit the Corfu Donkey Rescue During Your Stay

Written by in , Comments Off on Visit the Corfu Donkey Rescue During Your Stay

It’s true that donkeys are a common way to get around in Greece. Although it isn’t as common as it once was, there are still remote parts of the country that are only serviced by donkeys. Sadly, this means that there could be donkeys roaming the countryside that may not have a home. The reasons for this are numerous, ranging from animals that were once domesticated but have wandered away from their owners or those that simply live in the wild but don’t have the resources to survive. The Corfu Donkey Rescue attempts to solve this issue, at least for this particular island. While here, you should make it a point to stop in and pay the facility a visit.

Getting to the Corfu Donkey Rescue

It’s true that this Donkey Rescue facility is located on the island of Corfu. However, before you can visit it, you need to first make your way to the island. The two easiest ways to get here are by ferry and airplane. The regional airport services flights from throughout Greece and the surrounding area, and there are regularly flights coming in from the main airport in Athens. The port in Corfu does see ferries from all over Greece, especially from the major ports in the country and the surrounding area. Once you arrive in Corfu, you are free to head to Corfu Donkey Rescue whenever you find the time. It’s located in Paleokastrites, which is located in the western portion of the island.

About the Corfu Donkey Rescue

This organization got its start shortly after the team performed their first rescue, a donkey by the name of Hope. This took place in January of 2004 and since then, the team has made multiple rescues. Judy Quinn, the founder, is a British woman who noticed that the island had a lot of homeless and distressed wandering the island. The mission of the organization is to rescue the donkeys, rehabilitate them, give them a place to live, and offer them up for adoption to worthwhile homes. This is also a place where donkeys go to “retire”. After they have spent their lives working, they are giving a peaceful environment to spend the rest of their days. Ms. Quinn has also rehabilitated hundreds of donkeys back to health.

Visiting the Corfu Donkey Rescue

Aside from being a sanctuary for these animals, it is also open for visitors. People visiting Corfu have a chance to see what the organization is all about as well as spend time with the animals. Allowing people to visit and tour property helps gain exposure for their mission, as well as giving the animals a chance to spend time with some new people, which is good for them. While on the island, you should consider spending time here touring the facility and interacting with the animals.

Aside from all the usual activities you can do on Corfu, such as spend time at the beach, you should also consider spending time at the Corfu Donkey Rescue.
