Orthodox Saint Abramius History and Name Day Information
Comments Off on Orthodox Saint Abramius History and Name Day Information
If you are an Orthodox Christian, you are no stranger to the various saints. Some, however, are better known than others, yet it is important that we learn about as many of them as possible. Not only that, but if you were named after a saint, you would celebrate your name day on the saint’s feast day.
Saint Abramius is one of those saints. We celebrate his feast day on October 29th of each year. Here’s more information about him:
About Saint Abramius
Saint Abramius, also known as Our Righteous Father Abramius, was born in Mesopotamia in 296 in a place called Edessa. He is most known for being a monastic and somewhat of a recluse and for his work in bringing many pagans to abandon their old ways and become Christians.
He was known for being a hermit, which means that he lived an isolated and simple life. When others saw him living his holy life, they also become hermits alongside him, such as his niece. She went to live with him after her parents died and he had a positive influence on her life. However, she eventually succumbed to temptations done to her by the Evil One and became a prostitute.
When Abramius learned of what happened to her, he left his secluded life in order to find her. He disguised himself as a typical man of their times and entered her room in order to persuade her back into the holy life. He was successful and she left the sinful life and returned to a holy one. He passed away in 366.
Hymns of Saint Saint Abramius
Saint Peter feast day is on October 29th of each year. Here are some hymns that are sung or chanted on his feast day:
Apolytikion of Abramius the Recluse – Plagal of the Fourth Tone
The image of God, was faithfully preserved in you, O Father. For you took up the Cross and followed Christ. By Your actions you taught us to look beyond the flesh for it passes, rather to be concerned about the soul which is immortal. Wherefore, O Holy Abramius, your soul rejoices with the angels.
Kontakion of Abramius the Recluse – Third Tone
Thou, while living in the flesh, * wast as an angel upon earth;* and through thine ascetic pains,* thou didst become like a great tree* planted by the streams of temp’rance,* increasing greatly;* with the rivers of thy tears, thou didst cleanse away stains. * O Abramius, for this cause, * a godly vessel* of the Good Spirit art thou.
