Recipe for Pasteli – Greek Honey and Sesame Candy

Written by in , Comments Off on Recipe for Pasteli – Greek Honey and Sesame Candy

Although this recipe can be found throughout modern-day Greece, it originated in Ancient Greece. You can easily find this dish in markets in Greece and throughout the world. However, it’s also pretty easy to make. As a variation, you can omit 1/3 cup of the sesame seeds and substitute it for 1/3 cup crushed nuts, such as walnuts or pistachios.

Pasteli Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cup sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup Greek honey
  • 1 inch piece lemon or orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice or orange juice

Instructions onHow to Bake Honey and Sesame Candy :

Line an 8 x 8 baking pan with parchment or waxed paper.

Add the sesame seeds to a saucepan and set the heat on medium-low. Stir the sesame seeds constantly with a wooden spoon and allow them to cook until the seeds are slightly roasted. Transfer the seeds to a dish once they get to this point and set them aside.

Pour the honey into the pot along with the lemon or orange peel and the lemon or orange juice. Cook until the honey starts to bubble. Stir in the toasted sesame seeds and then transfer to the baking pan. Using a spatula, flatten the mixture so that it evenly covers the surface of the pan.

Place the baking dish in the refrigerator for thirty minutes. Remove from refrigerator and cut into small pieces. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.
