These onion pancakes are a staple in Greece, especially since the ingredients are so easy to find. Many variations exist depending on the region but the basic idea is that onions are mixed with herbs, flour, and other ingredients to make a savory pancake that is perfect with any meal!
Greek Style Onion Pancakes (Kremidotiganites) Recipe Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 3/4 cup water
- 3 medium onions, chopped fine
- 1/2 cup chopped, fresh herbs such as dill, parsley, and mint
- Olive oil, for frying
How to Make Greek Onion Pancakes:
Add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper to a large bowl and whisk together. Stir in the water using a wooden spoon. Only stir until the batter is wet and well-mixed. Don’t stir too much or else the batter will get tough. Stir in the onions and herbs and set aside.
Add about 1 tablespoon of olive to a large nonstick skillet. Heat for a few minutes over medium and swirl the oil so that the bottom of the pan is coated. Add batter in tablespoon amounts so that you make small pancakes. Be careful not to overcrowd the skillet – the pancakes shouldn’t touch. Cook on one side for a few minutes, or until that side is golden brown. Flip and cook for a few more minutes until all the batter is gone. Remove from the skillet using a nonreactive spatula and place on paper towels to drain. Repeat until all the batter is gone.
