Marmalada Suko, or fig jam, is a popular treat served throughout Greece as a condiment any time of day or with dessert. Figs are widely available throughout Greece. If making it outside of Greece, you will need to find fresh figs, which can be difficult depending on where you live. Figs need a warm, arid climate to thrive.

Greek Style Fig Jam (Marmalada Suko) Ingredients:

  • Olive oil, for brushing
  • 4 medium, fresh figs
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon Greek honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh, chopped orange peel
  • Cinnamon, for sprinkling

How to Make Greek Fig Jam:

Preheat the oven to 375 Degrees Fahrenheit.

Brush an 8 x 8 glass baking pan with olive oil.

Cut each fig in half and brush the skins with olive oil.

Place in the baking sheet skin side down.

Drizzle water evenly over each of the fig halves. Drizzle the honey over each of the fig halves and then sprinkle the orange peel and cinnamon.

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake until the figs are cooked all the way through and soften. This should take about thirty minutes.

Remove the dish from the oven and let cool until you’re able to handle the figs with your fingers. Peel the figs and and place the flesh in a bowl. Add the pan juices and mash the figs until the desired consistency is achieved.

Place in a sterile glass jar and over until use. This jam should keep for about two weeks in the refrigerator.
