Recipe for Greek Style Almond Torte

Ancient Romans also referred to almonds as “Greek nuts,” since they were first cultivated in Greece. It’s no surprise that so many Greek desserts, like this almond torte, feature almonds as the main flavor.

Greek Style Almond Torte (Glykisma Amigthalou) Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup yogurt
  • 1 cup ground almonds

For the Syrup: 

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup sater
  • 1/2 lemon juice

Directions on How to Bake Greek Almond Tore:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease an 8×8 cake pan with butter or spray with nonstick cooking spray.

Sift flour, baking powder and soda into a large mixing bowl.

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time; add sifted dry ingredients alternately with yogurt, mixing well after each addition. Add almonds.

Pour batter into greased pan. Bake in the oven for about 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan.

Boil sugar, water and lemon juice for 5 minutes. Pour syrup over almond torte.
