Traditionally, this recipe, also known as Karidopita or Karithopita, was made without chocolate. Over the past few decades, however, Greeks have developed a taste for chocolate. Recipes such as this have gotten increasingly popular.
Chocolate Walnut Cake Recipe Ingredients:
- 1 recipe traditional Karidopita
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
How to Bake Chocolate Walnut Cake:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a large baking pan with cooking spray or brush with Greek olive oil.
Prepare the Karidopita according to the recipe instructions. Add the cocoa powder with the flour and then omit the two different types and raisins and substitute for 1 cup of chocolate chops, instead.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake in the center of the oven. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. This should take about 45 minutes.
Make the syrup while the cake cooks. Prepare the syrup as directed but omit the lemon zest and substitute for orange zest.
Pour the syrup over the cake as explained in the recipe. Cut the cake and enjoy.
