Figs grow plentifully throughout Greece. This recipe is one of the common ways to prepare them.
Greek Style Aromatic Figs (Sika Xsera) Recipe Ingredients:
- 3 cups sweet red wine, such as Mavrodaphne
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 18 fresh figs
- 6 bay leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon fresh, chopped orange zest
How to Make Aromatic Figs:
Place the wine and sugar into a saucepan and whisk together. Add the figs, bay leaves, cinnamon stick, and orange zest to the pan and let soak overnight.
Set the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for ten minutes. Remove the figs from the saucepan and let them rest. Continue to simmer the liquid until a thick syrup forms. Pour the syrup over the figs just before serving.
