Mykonos is one of the most popular travel destinations in all of Greece. There is certainly no shortage of things to do while you visit the island, either! Mykonos has a party atmosphere, and people who come here are eager to spend their days sitting at the beach and seeing the sites before
they put on their party clothes and hit the town well into the early morning. Here are some of the main experiences that you really need to have while you visit this island:
Watch the Sunset
The nearby island of Santorini gets all the glory when it comes to sunsets. However, the sunsets on Mykonos are truly amazing in their own way! The best views occur on the main beach in Mykonos Town. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to snap your photo right when the sun dips behind the famous windmills. There are also several restaurants and cafes that are in view of the sunset, but you need to get to them early if you want to secure one of the better tables. These places fill up fast!
Go to the Beach
Another activity on Mykonos is to head to the beach to soak up the sun. You can spend your day at one of the popular beaches, such as Super Paradise, Paradise, or Elia beaches. However, these beaches can all become over crowded during the peak summer travel months. If you want a quieter experience, consider some of the small, lesser known beaches such as Kalafatis, which is known for its soft sand, and Agios Stefanos. Since Mykonos is such a popular destination, however, none of these beaches are truly secluded.
Learn About the History
Despite its reputation of attracting a crowd intent on partying, there are also plenty of attractions on the island to satisfy any history buff. Even if you do want to explore the nightlife, you can still take some time out of your partying schedule to learn a bit about the island’s past! Top attractions include the Archaeological site of Delos and the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos.
Enjoy the Local Cuisine
One of the best things about visiting Greece, besides enjoying the sunshine and nightlife, is that you have the chance to sample some wonderful local food! There are restaurants, cafes, and tavernas scattered throughout the island and many of these will provide you with a truly delicious meal. In particular, you absolutely need to sample some of the freshly caught seafood that is served up in restaurants throughout the country.
Go Shopping
Because the island gets so many visitors, there is no shortage of shopping opportunities located throughout Mykonos. Wherever you stay, you should take the time to meander through the boutiques so that you can find some souvenirs to take home with you. Don’t forget to look through some of the many art galleries that are located near the shops!
There are so many things to do on Mykonos, it can be hard to choose how you’ll spend your day. The best trips are ones that give you an overview of the history, food, beaches and nightlife all once!
